*A few months ago, whilst visiting friends in London...*
There I was, faced with one of life's most hard-hitting questions. I found myself pondering as one does, "what do I want to eat for dinner?".
I was unable to choose.
A suggestion was made.
A single word that forever changed everything.
We went to Taro on London's Old Compton Street and ordered two Pork Ramens.
After that first-ever bowl of ramen, I suddenly understood the meaning of life.
It was greedily slurping at noodles. It was a scattering of scallions and pickled ginger floating amongst dangerously-tender pieces of pork in a milky broth. (And I don't like to admit it, but I'm pretty sure I saw my fortune told by those sesame seeds left at the bottom of the bowl.)
A few months later I was still thinking about that meal. I really thought I was going mad. I mean it was just a bowl of noodles.
But was it really, 'just a bowl of noodles'?
In Berlin, Cocolo offers refuge to my ramen obsession.
Originally opened as a 10-seater in Mitte, Cocolo quickly became the place to eat on a cold winter's eve. Even if it meant waiting outside in the snow first.
Last summer sister restaurant Cocolo X-Berg (U-Bahn Kottbusser Tor [U1, U8]) came forth, offering up great food and beautiful views of the Landwehr Canal to a flock of anticipating Kreuzköllners.
With ample seating for any weather, this location of Cocolo serves food from midday on, as opposed to Cocolo in Mitte which is open solely for dinner service.
Considering the amount of times I've been here, I am sad to confess that I've only ever ordered one thing. Tonkotsu.
Because it is made with pork bone, the Tonkotsu broth is satisfyingly creamy and smooth: it creates a perfect balance between the pork meat, various toppings and, of course, the glorious noodles.
To be honest, I think it'll take a couple more visits before I can even consider ordering something other else...
Go to Cocolo and get some ramen. Slurp, slurp, slurp away. And when the noodles are gone, don't despair. The broth is still there.
And the broth is the best part.
When the broth is gone, you'll be too full to eat another bite.
* A shoutout to the insanely brilliant service at this restaurant is called for. Food comes quickly, servers are nice, attentive, and prompt.*
